Foreign Minister Yashwant Sinha launched a cleanliness drive at the St Columbus College ground in his constituency here today.

Among those in attendance were Chief Minister Babulal Marandi, a number of BJP leaders and at least three of Sinha’s colleagues from the Union Cabinet — Ananth Kumar, Vikram Verma and Deputy Prime Minister L.K. Advani.

Advani administered an oath to the audience, who had come from far-flung areas of Hazaribagh district, to keep themselves, their homes, villages and places of work clean. As many as 12 projects worth about Rs 94 crore were innaugurated online by Advani. The Hazaribagh district administration had organised the meeting, dubbed Vikas Maha Parv.

Later, Advani said: ‘‘In the past I have laid foundation stones. But I had never imagined that I would have to lay so many of them all at once. I am feeling nice…It has been appropriately described as Vikas Maha Parv.’’ However, he added: ‘‘I will see which of the projects have been implemented within a year.’’

Moving on to the BJP’s favourite topic of national pride, Advani recalled his 59-day ‘Swarna Jayanti Yatra’ on the occasion of the 50th year of the country’s Independence. He said he had visited places and homes of freedom fighters.
