LUDHIANA, April 19: It was like a dream come true for Bhupinder Singh, 50, (real name withheld) of an adjoining village here when his 13-year-old son, suffering from severe genital disorders, was turned into a "complete boy" after a single operation done by noted plastic surgeon and former head of DMC’s micro-vascular surgery department, Dr Ravinder Tah.
The boy, according to Bhupinder Singh, at one time, was about to be handed over to a group of eunuchs, when he could not recover even after three surgeries conducted at different hospitals.
“Bhupinder Singh’s case was no exception,” said Dr Tah now working at Satluj Hospital. People have misconceptions that maldevelopment of sex organs could not be rectified and most of the parents and children suffer mental trauma and hand over their children to eunuchs.
“Because of the social stigma involved in such cases, people are generally discouraged from visiting a doctor to get their child checked up,” said Bhupinder Singh.“It’s a question of the child’s future. I advice all parents who have children with ambiguous genitalia, to immediately consult experts in the field and escape mental torture,”he says.
The disease, called hypospadiasis, is very common these days and can be found in one out of five new births, while true hermaphrodites (hijras) are one in 20,000 cases.
“I myself have corrected more than 500 such cases until now and at least 16 during the last few months through single surgery, which is easier done in stages and is also cost effective ,” he added.
