SINGAPORE, JULY 11: A surge in the number of hotspots caused by plantation fires in Indonesia threatens to enshroud Singapore in haze, the city state said on Tuesday.
Singapore’s Meteorological Service and Ministry of Environment said in a joint statement that satellite images show more than 200 hot spots over the last two days in Indonesia’s central Sumatra region.
"While the low-level winds are not expected to blow thesmoke haze towards Singapore in the next two to three days, should the fires spread further and the winds change to a more westerly direction, Singapore could be affected by some smoke haze on a few days," the statement said.
Since early Tuesday, Singapore’s Pollutant Standards Index(PSI) has hovered between 15 and 30, or within the healthy range, they said.
A reading of between zero and 50 is considered to be in the"good" range, 51 to 100 is "moderate", with few or no health concerns and above 100 is considered "unhealthy".
