Wrestlers’ gesture
Disciples of the late wrestling coach Guru Hanuman today handed over a cheque of Rs 22,100 to the Prime Minister as their contribution to the Army Central Welfare Fund. Olympian wrestler Sudesh Kumar, international and national matmen Beg Raj Yadav, Roshan Lal Sagarmal, Sujeet Maan, Rajiv Tomar and Chand Ram, coach Mahasingh Rao and MLA Harikrishan were among those in the delegation of the Guru Hanuman akhara. The delegation said every wrestler of the Guru Hanuman akhara was ready to serve the country if the occasion arose.
World Cup Taekwondo nA World Cup Taekwondo will be organised in Delhi in December, according to a press release from the Taekwondo Authority of India. The proposed championship has the blessing of the world body, which has its headquarters in Seoul.
According to the president of the TAI Rizwan Ahmed Ansari and manager Rafiq Ahmed, who completed a tour of several countries to seek their participation in the championship, they are expecting nine countries to take part in the World Cup. Meanwhile, they will also be touring Korea, Canada and European nations to gather support for the event.
Sonu, Sunder shine
A half century by Sonu and a fine bowling by Sunder (4 for 25) enabled Laxmi Bai Nagar Coaching Centre beat Young Boys by one wicket in a triangular series at RK Puram Sports Complex.

Women soccer academy
The newly-formed Punjab Women Football Academy, claimed to be the first of its kind in the country, would start functioning from next week here.
Stating this today, Punjab Women Football Association secretary Surinder Bhambri said 20 players have been selected by the association in two phases of trials held on July 2 and yesterday. He said all arrangements regarding education, hostel facility and training kits for players have been completed and a coach appointed on a yearly contract.
Prem Azad nominated
Country’s first recipient of Dronacharya award in cricket, Desh Prem Azad has been nominated on the Sports Council of Chandigarh. Azad’s nomination was done for the period of three years to give boost to development of sports in the region, according to an official release here today.
Punjab Governor Lt Gen (Retd) BKN Chhibber, who made the appointment, recalled Azad’s contribution to the promotion of sports particularly cricket. Legendary all-rounder Kapil Dev, former international Chetan Sharma, Yograj Singh, Ashok Malhotra, Harbhajan Singh and several first class cricketers are all products of Azad’s stable.
