KOLHAPUR, March 25: A deficit budget earmarking Rs 45 lakhs for scholarships to students, Rs 89 lakhs for Internet and Rs 11.5 lakh for completing the construction of Shivaji University’s `Bhasha Bhavan’, was approved by the University senate, late on Wednesday evening.

Presenting the budget in the senate Welfare Council director R S Patil, stated that estimated receipts during 1999-2000 would be around Rs 27.05 crores. Of these, nearly Rs 12 crores are expected by way of examination and education fees while the remaining amount comprises government grants, research and development funds, Patil informed the senate. While the university will incur expenditure of nearly Rs 28.54 cores, hence the budget shows a deficit of Rs 1.49 crores, he added.

Out of total expected expenditure, he said Rs 10. 27 crores will be spent on regular facilities to students, expenditure of various departments, hostel, library, holding examinations and various university publications. Amount worth nearly Rs two crores will be spent on salaries of permanent and daily wages employees. For the languages department, Rs 43.08 lakhs have been earmarked for construction of a guest house at Solapur and various other developmental works. Vice Chancellor D N Dhanagare, presided over the meeting. Speaking on the occasion, after the budget was unanimously approved, he said that budget will lead the university on the path of development.
