As the election agent for her mother and Congress president Sonia Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra took on just one task on Monday — ensure that Amawa block, where people live under the “terror” of local MLA Akhilesh Singh, witness free and fair election.

With “the Akhilesh factor” playing heavily on her mind, Priyanka left for Amawa at 8; visited every polling booth in the block and then revisited these booths later in the day. From 8 to 5, she measured the length and breadth of Amawa and travelled over 200 km.

‘‘I was told that Akhilesh Singh was seen in this area day before yesterday (April 24). I don’t know if he is still around,’’ she told The Indian Express. Sitting in the front seat of the grey Tata Safari, she went to Lalupur Chauhan village at 11.15 am. She went straight to the Congress polling agent. ‘‘Kaisa chal rahan hain? (how are things going),’’ she said. After taking a brief from him, she went inside the booth, took stock of the situation.

‘‘They (Akhilesh and his associates) may think that I came and went. I was told that they would become active in the afternoon. So I had planned to come back here,’’ Priyanka said, adding that one of the Congress polling agent was threatened by Akhilesh’s brother. Priyanka did not go to Amethi but she was in touch with Rahul over the phone.
