LUCKNOW, SEPT 4: With rains reducing the 11th National Inter-zonal Junior Athletic Championships at the Sports College tracks to a farce, the organisers managed to squeeze in some of the ``key events'' on the last day in an effort to pick the junior squad for the Singapore ATF meet. The last day of the programme, beginning late in the afternoon on a wet day, produced a meet record to provide some silver-lining to the confused show when the rains relented briefly. The lone meet record came in the 10,000 metres for boys' under-20 when Shashi Prakash of North Zone timed 30:31.64 seconds to erase the old mark of 30:47.5s set by Suresh Verma, also from the North, in 1992. In a field which had East Zone's Gojen Singh, the 25-lap event promised much and Gojen seemed to be an easy winner until the 15th lap. Then, Shashi gained upperhand and surged ahead with Amani Saini of East Zone behind. But just after the 18th lap, Gojen, who lagged behind, dropped out.Saini finished second in 30:32.1 which bettered Verma'stime sent in 1992. T Chandramohan of South timed 10.6s to claim the gold while SN Shukla came second in 10.7s to push Paramjit of North to third spot at 10.8s in the under-20 boys' sprint event. The under-18 gold went to M Prasana of South in 10.9s while Vinod Thakur timed 11 flat to take the second position. In the 800m events for boys, Munna Singh of North in the under-16, KM Binu of East in under-20 and Mallappa Tarigera of South claimed gold for boys' 18. Among girls, the under-20 sprint result was withheld following detection of an overage girl. However, the under-16 and under-18 gold medals went to Lopamudra Roy of East and S Geetha of South, respectively.RESULTSBoys (Under-20) 100m: T Shandra Mohan 10.6, SN Shukla (EZ) 10.7, Paramjit (NZ) 10.8; 800m: KM Binu (EZ) 1:53.0, PS Primush (SZ) 1:53.5, Anand (NZ) 1:54.3; 10,000m: Shashi Prakash (NZ) 30:31.64 (NMR), Aman Saini (EZ) 30:32.08, R Yellappa (SZ) 33:07.35.Under-18: 100m: M (EZ) 11.1; 800m: Mallappa Tarigera (SZ) 1:58.2, MushaqAhmed (SZ) 1:58.5, Guruvinder (NZ) 1:58.8.
