October 26: After all the Indian-ness in the office and the kitcken of the United States President, Bill Clinton, here comes another slice of India for the Prez. The treat, a concert performed by Sharon Prabhakar on November 18 in Houston, Texas, will also be attended by the Indian big-wigs of Houston and 200-odd members of the White House. “What can I say? It’s just such an honour to perform in front of the President, so I’m going to make the most of this opportunity by blowing their minds away,” she says.

Though, the concert has no specific agenda, it is perceived as another goodwill gesture between the two countries, to add to the bonhomie that was forged since a year. “I believe that America and India have so much in common and I hope to bridge the gap and get the two countries even closer together,” Prabhakar says.

This isn’t the first time she has played lyrical ambassadoress. She has been sent as a special government envoy to countries such as Singapore (she did a concert called One, where she shared the stage with Andrew Llyod Webber’s wife and Broadway actress and Filipino singer Liah Selonka), Russia, Japan, Hong Kong and China. “Looking back, I just feel so fortunate. Not every artiste gets to represent her country and help build relations, and I’m very grateful for that,” she told Newsline.

Prabhakar, who already has a television show and three plays in the pipeline, is revelling in the honour. “It’s just so exciting,” says the singer, who has six albums to her credit. “Even as I speak, my troupe is rehearsing for the performance and all preparations for the big night are underway.”

The November 18 concert is being organised by Oak’s, Sharon’s management company, which handles all her projects.
