NEW DELHI, FEB 26: Shakti Singh became the first Indian to cross the 20-metre barrier in a competition, though he had achieved exactly the same distance 20.09 metres in an assessment trial some weeks back. But throwing performances, especially from the men, on home turf being somewhat suspect the best an Indian has achieved on foreign soil being more than 1.50 metres less than what Shakti achieved this evening the kudos for the day’s best showing must be shared between that wisp of a girl, Sunita Rani, and KM Beenamol.

Shakti Singh touched 20.09m on the first throw and then didn’t pick up the shot again while Bahadur Singh achieved 19.19m on his first attempt and grabbed the second spot. If Shakti had just one throw, Bahadur had just two, the other one measuring 18.09m.

Sunita Rani, running only her second competitive two-lapper the first one was two days ago in Bhopal clocked 2:02.15 while coming second behind Fedotova Ekatrina of Russia, who timed 2:01.68s.
