Despite the fact that Mukhopadhyay had a seminar to attend that day he was not allowed to enter his office. Angry at the way he was treated the V-C sent his resignation to the chancellor who is also the Governor of the state.

‘‘I thought if I am not allowed into my office I have no right to continue as V-C and resigned,’’ said Mukhopadhyay. However, following the regret expressed by the students, I decided to stay back,’’ he added.

Apurba Chatterjee, secretary of the state unit of SFI said: ‘‘The V-C was hurt by some comments of the activists. We have apologised. We have also set up an enquiry committee to look into the matter,’’ Chatterjee said.
