SRINAGAR, DEC 27: The All Parties Hurriyat Conference today condemned the hijacking of the Indian Airlines plane and called it an inhuman act “detrimental to the cause of the freedom movement of Kashmir”.

“We don’t approve of such things. We are ourselves suffering and thus can imagine the suffering of those who have been kept as hostages and their relatives,” said Moulvi Umar Farooq, the officiating chairman of the APHC.Another Hurriyat leader and head of the People’s Conference, Abdul Gani Lone, told The Indian Express that “this unfortunate incident has once again made it clear that until and unless the main problem of Jammu and Kashmir is resolved, such things are bound to happen.” Condemning the hijacking, he said that the Hurriyat Conference was outright against all acts which led to suffering of people. “We are against all types of violence as we are ourselves victims of state violence. We will never approve of any such act,” he said.

The Hurriyat Conference is to hold a special meetingtomorrow to “discuss the hijacking and its ramifications on the ongoing movement”.The Hizbul Mujahideen has also condemned the hijacking. In a statement published in the press, the central commander of the outfit, Abdul Majid Dar, said that “Kashmiri Mujahideen consider hijacking and terrorist activities as inimical to the interests of the ongoing freedom struggle”.

He was quoted as saying that “there is a deep conspiracy to draw the name of the Kashmiri Mujahideen into such incidents so as to tarnish their image. We would not sacrifice the lives of hundreds of innocent and unarmed civilians for the lives of a few individuals.”
