MUMBAI, NOV 14: A marginal recovery of sentiments was witnessed on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) today mainly due to the emergence of short-covering coupled with institutional support. The closing rates showed small but widespread gains. The volume of business expanded despite today being a holiday. The closing undertone appeared steady.
The BSE sensitive index moved between 3594.18 and 3514.69 before finishing at 3569.77 with a small gain of 15.67 points compared to the previous level of 3554.10. The BSE-100 index gained 4.91 points to 1544.03 from the previous level of 1539.12.
Brokers said pivotals moved widely on alternative bouts of buying and selling mainly due to today being the last session for the current settlement but recovered at the end on fresh buying by the domestic financial institutions. FI have bought shares of several scrips, particularly index-based shares in a bid to contain the falling tendency.
Bull operators too squared off their positions, mostly buying at the lower levels in anticipation of lower badla charges at the turn of the account.The volume of business also improved remarkably to Rs 819.66 crore from Rs 678.40 crore. ITC remained the most active scrip with a turnover of Rs 333.80 crore followed by SBI of Rs 115.67 crore, Reliance of Rs 105.94 crore, Tata Tea of Rs 33.81 crore and Castrol of Rs 30.34 crore.
ITC closed slightly lower by Rs 1.50 to Rs 537.75. Tata Steel lost a rupee at Rs 153.25, Tata Tea Rs 6.75 at Rs 353.75. Gujarat A Cement, HPCL,Hindalco, Larsen,Indian Rayon,Asian Paints, Telco, Siemens and Thermax also remained subdued. Reliance gained Rs 2.25 at Rs 165.75. ACC, Bajaj Auto, BSES, Glaxo, Grasim,Hindustan Lever,ICICI, Mahindra and Mahindra, Tata Chemicals and Tata Hydro also remained better.
In cash group, Bayer lost Rs 35 at Rs 1440,Boots Rs 13 at Rs 607,Cipla Rs 33.25 at Rs 611.75, Punjab Tractors Rs 23.25 at Rs 691.75 and Tata Intotech Rs 38.50 at Rs 63.50 on profit taking.
