MUMBAI, Aug 13: Ignoring the strictures of the Election Commission, Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray declared here today that his party will not abandon its principal ideology and contest all elections on an aggressive Hindutva plank.

Addressing the anniversary function of Sena fortnightly Marmik, Thackeray said the need to contest the elections on the Hindutva plank was necessary since “the nation is passing through a critical period.” The Sena chief’s statement assumes significant political importance since the Election Commission has laid severe strictures against candidates seeking votes in the name of religion.

The election of three senior Shiv Sena leaders Subhash Desai, Ramesh Prabhu and Suryakant Mahadik were set aside earlier by the Bombay High Court on the ground that they sought votes in the name of religion. The election of Sena MP Mohan Rawle is also under dispute for the same reasons.

Secondly, the statement of Thackeray endorses the views expressed by Chief Minister Manohar Joshi duringthe debate on the Srikrishna Commission Report. Joshi had dubbed the report as “anti-Hindu” and “pro-Muslim.” In a terse speech, Thackeray expressed strong displeasure over the ongoing war of words between BJP city unit president Kirit Somaiya and Housing Minister Suresh Dada Jain.

“This is a serious government and not a child playing. I will not tolerate such behaviour in future and party activists should refrain from approaching the media at the cost of the party,” he said.
