NASHIK, March 15: The Shiv Sena Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Niphad, Mandakini Kadam, has been booked under the Prevention of Atrocities against Backward Classes and Scheduled Tribes Act, after she assaulted and passed casteist remarks against the former chairperson of the Niphad Taluka Panchayat Samiti, Meerabai Veernarayan, last evening.
A group of Sena activists also pelted stones at the Niphad Panchayat Samiti office. Five policemen were hurt in the stone-pelting.
According to a First Information Report (FIR) filed by Meerabai, the MLA and her accomplices stormed into her house at Hanuman Chowk, Ozar, and assaulted her and her husband, Arjun and ransacked the house. The MLA also allegedly passed casteist remarks against Meerabai, who is from the `Chamar’ (cobbler) caste.
The FIR stated that the MLA threatened Meerabai and her husband of dire consequences if they informed the police. The police have registered an offence of rioting and committing atrocities on Scheduled Castepersons.
Meerabai, incidentally, is a Shiv Sena member and was elected chairperson of the Niphad taluka Panchayat Samiti last year. She completed her tenure of one year and allegedly voted for Congress candidate Anjali Darade during the election of her successor, inviting the MLA’s wrath.
Incidentally, in the elections to the chairmanship of the Panchayat Samitis yesterday, Congress managed to retain its hold in eight of the 13 Panchayat Samitis.
The Shiv Sena-Bharatiya Janata Party (SS-BJP) alliance had to remain content with Panchayat Samitis in five talukas. The Panchayat Samitis at Nashik, Igatpuri, Malegaon, Sinhar and Yeola are with the Sena-BJP.
Those at Dindori, Baglan, Chandwad, Peth, Surgana, Kalwan, Nandgaon and Niphad are with the Congress.
