MUMBAI, March 20: Opposition corporators in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation have alleged that the Shiv Sena, particularly Sena leader Nandu Satam, has cornered a lion’s share of funds reserved for capital works in wards.

Of the Rs 50 crore allocation, the Sena got the lion’s share of Rs 37.5 crore, the BJP Rs 6.55 crore, the Congress Rs 5.75 crore and an independent member Rs 19 lakh. The Samajwadi Party has not been allotted any money. Standing committee members have demanded that the money should have been distributed in proportion to the number of corporators from various parties.

As only standing committee members are allowed to submit proposals, corporators route their proposals for capital works in their respective wards through committee members, after which funds are allocated. The corporators had originally demanded Rs 172 crores, but the administration, reeling under a financial crunch, slashed the amount to Rs 50 crore and left it to the corporators to decide each party’s share.

Somecorporators have protested in writing to the standing committee chairperson. A corporator even charged that the allocation was rushed through by the Sena and chief accountant taking advantage of both the lack of time available to the committee to debate the matter and the fact that the budget had to be passed.

A corporator stated that as Satam had submitted the maximum proposals – 71 of the 199 proposals handed in this year – he was allocated the largest chunk of funds. He had originally demanded over Rs 60 crore. Bal Rane and Digambar Kandarkar, also of the Sena, were allocated Rs 7.5 crore and Rs five crore respectively.
