In the second time in as many years, the Navy has changed its ensign. The main concern, said Naval officials, was its lack of visibility at sea.

The blue and white combination, which was adopted two years ago on August 15, 2001, blended with the sky and the sea.

The new ensign will have horizontal and vertical red lines intersecting with a golden state emblem at the centre. The national flag will be placed in the upper canton next to the staff. A similar combination with the blue Dharma Chakra has been decided upon for the flag and pendants. The new designs have been approved by the Government and will be introduced by the President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam on Sunday.
