Scotland ended one of the worst spells in their long international history when they beat Iceland 2-0 in a European championship qualifier on Saturday to give Berti Vogts his first win as their coach.
Scotland had failed to win in six previous matches under the German but an early goal from Christian Dailly and a second from Gary Naysmith midway through the second half gave Scotland all three points and lifted them back into contention in the Group V race
Elsewhere in early action, the Czech Republic began their campaign with a 2-0 win over Moldova in Chisinau in Group III, while Sweden drew 1-1 with Hungary in a bad-tempered Group IV qualifier in Stockholm.
A floodlight failure brought an early halt to the Group X match between Georgia and Russia in Tbilisi which was abandoned goalless at half-time. The match will be replayed on Sunday.
Bulgaria, who began their Group VIII campaign with a 2-0 win in Belgium a month ago, maintained their 100 per cent record with a 2-0 win over Croatia with first-half goals from Stilian Petrov and Dimitar Berbatov sealing their victory.
In all 20 matches were being played on Saturday and another 19 next Wednesday which should go some way to separating the wheat from the chaff in the hunt for places in the European championship finals in Portugal in 2004. (Reuters)
