The Supreme Court has asked the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) to extend counselling and fill up 160 vacant seats in MBBS and BDS courses in government colleges under the all-India medical quota. The decision, however, is a special case and should not be considered a precedent, the court said.
The bench ruled that students who have already joined MBBS could not undergo counselling again but However, those eligible for MBBS but who have joined a BDS course, can go through another round of counselling. The DGHS was to complete counselling by September 8 and admit students by September 13.
This is the first time the DGHS will hold a third round of counselling. The SC’s directive came on two petitions filed by students who had figured in the merit list prepared by the CBSE for the medical quota.
