The Supreme Court today sent the entire CBI case material against former Uttar Pradesh CM Mayawati in the Taj corridor scam case to the Central Vigilance Commission (cvc) for its opinion whether she should be prosecuted.The order was passed by a bench of Justices Ruma Pal, S.B. Sinha and S.H. Kapadia, which had summoned evidence collected by the CBI after Attorney-General Milon Bannerjee’s call for closure of the case against Mayawati.The investigating officer and five others were of the opinion that the former CM could be prosecuted, whereas the Director (Prosecution) and the CBI director felt no chargesheet could be filed. At the request of Solicitor General G.E. Vahanvati, who appeared for CBI, the bench said only the evidence in the case should be referred to the CVC within a week. The next hearing is after two weeks.The other accused are former chief secretary D.S. Bagga, former Union environment secretary K.C. Mishra, former state environment secretary R.K. Sharma and Mayawati’s former secretary P.L. Punia.
