PUNE, Oct 13: The old Sangam bridge, the surface of which has developed major cracks, is likely to remain close for all vehicular traffic for another ten days, according to civic officials.

Deputy engineer R.T. Shelkande, accompanied by deputy mayor Bhagwan Kshirsagar today inspected the bridge and found another major crack in an arch. The bridge was constructed by the British in 1920. Shelkande said he had told development engineer (roads) P.T. Pawar about the crack and he would inspect the bridge on Wednesday along with experts.

Officials said they were contemplating a ban for heavy vehicles in view of the urgent repairs required on the bridge. They wondered how the ban imposed in 1991 was lifted without intimating the corporation.

Shelkande said three service lines — sewerage, water and telephone — pass under the bridge while a partition wall, separating the water and sewerage pipelines, has also been found damaged considerably. He said the pipeline, laid about 60 years back, required immediate repairs. He said the corporation cleaned the entire pipeline today. The remaining work will start tomorrow.
