PHILADELPHIA, MAR 1: For the sixth time in nine years, defending champion Pete Sampras has reached the final of the Advanta Tennis Championships, where he will face third seed Thomas Enqvist of Sweden, the 1995 champion.
Sampras, whose first tournament victory came in this event in 1990, got off to a slow start but then overpowered sixth seed Tommy Haas of Germany 6-4, 6-4 while Enqvist eliminated Canadian qualifier Sebastien Lareau 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.
Facing Sampras in the final doesn’t seem to awe the 23-year-old Enqvist, who has a 12-2 record in tournament finals after winning in Marseille two weeks ago. Sampras and Enqvist have never met in a tournament final.
