ROME, May 14: Pete Sampras handled the clay, the heat and past nemesis Magnus Norman in straight sets to reach the third round at the Italian Open tennis tournament today.
The world8217;s top-ranked player, continuing to look comfortable on European clay ahead of the French Open, beat the Swede 7-6 10-8, 6-4 in just over two hours.
Sampras next faces fellow American Michael Chang. The No 15 seed eliminated French qualifier Arnaud Clement 7-5, 6-1.
Sampras held four set points on Norman8217;s serve during the 12th game of the first set, but never broke through and they went to a tie-breaker.
The top seed fought off two set points for the Swede, including one with an ace measured at 197 kilometers per hour, and then finally converted his own sixth set point. Sampras got to 9-8 with a 213 kph ace, and captured the tie-breaker when a Norman lob sailed long.
Yevgeny Kafelnikov, the 1996 French Open champion, was not in top form but got enough help from opponent Todd Martin to reach the third round with a 1-6,7-6 7-4, 6-3 victory.
