
CHANDIGARH, August 11: Punjab Finance Minister and senior Akali leader Kanwaljit Singh today reiterated his party stand on Udham Singh Nagar issue and stressed the need to stick to party ideology and principles if it were to prosper.
He was speaking at the occasion of the one-day training camp, organised by All India Sikh Students’ Federation, at the Sector 19 gurdwara here today.
The AISSF also passed a three-point resolution expressing its loyalty to the Shiromani Akali Dal’s (SAD) leadership. “It is perfectly justified for SAD to raise the issue of Udham Singh Nagar and for that matter any issue that relates to the Sikh community,” Kanwaljit said. “The party is firm on its decision to withdraw suppport if its demand on Udham Singh Nagar is not fulfilled,” he added.Stating that AISSF was a key organisation of SAD, he assured the activists that the party will take care to involve them while framing its policies. He pointed out various achievements of the state government during its nearly year-and-a-half-old rule.
He also appealed to the Federation activists to ensure development and modernisation in villages of the state. Earlier, it passed a resolution expressing its full faith in Badal’s leadership and endorsed the steps taken by him towards the development of the state and for achieving Hindu-Sikh unity.
The AISSF resolution also appealed to the SAD to take up the issue of Udham Singh Nagar with BJP and said it must not be allowed to go to the proposed Uttranchal district. It also sought the removal of unemployment by setting up more industrial units.
The Federation will hold its next meeting on August 31 in Jalandhar. Addressing the activists, AISSF president Avtar Singh Boparai flayed the Mehta-Chawla faction for allegedly misguiding youth and selling its interests.
Former AISSF president Harminder Singh Khalsa appealed to the activists to maintain discipline and character. Others who spoke on the occasion included SAD’s local unit president Gurpartap Singh Riar and Manjit Singh Bhoma general secretary Satnam Singh Deriyal and senior vice-president Amarjeet Singh.
