Justice Yogesh Kumar Sabharwal was on Tuesday appointed the new Chief Justice of India. He will take over from the present Chief Justice R C Lahoti, who retires on October 31.

Justice Sabharwal, who mainly practised Civil and Constitutional cases in Delhi High Court, was elevated as an Additional Judge of High Court in November 1986. He was appointed Chief Justice of Bombay HC in February 1999 and elevated to SC in January 2000.

During his illustrious career, Justice Sabharwal served as chairman of Supreme Court Legal Services Committee, executive chairman of National Legal Services Authority; chairman of COFEPOSA Board; chairman of Selection Committee for Appointment to the post of chairman and member (Judicial) of the Railway Claims Tribunal.

He also headed the five-judge Constitution Bench that gave the verdict holding the Presidential proclamation dissolving the Bihar Assembly unconstitutional.
