PATHANAMTHITTA, January 16: Five people were crushed to death and fourteen others injured, five of them seriously, when a Kerala Transport Corporation bus ploughed through a group of Sabarimala pilgrims, sleeping on the wayside at Pampa early today.

The mishap occurred when the bus skidded off the road following brake failure.

The scene of the accident presented a gory picture with shattered limbs and brains strewn around in a pool of blood, according to eyewitness reports received here. The bus was proceeding to Kottayam.

The deceased were identified as S Murugan (32) of Cheekkal and Loknathan (35) of Pallippalayam, Erode, in Tamil Nadu, Nagesh (35), Sekhar (22) and Emanoorappan (33) from Karnataka.

While the seriously injured were admitted to the Kottayam Medical College hospital, the others were treated at the general hospital here.
