The RSS has come out in support of Tamil Nadu over Cauvery, apparently acknowledging Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa’s stand on religious conversions.

RSS spokesman M.G. Vaidya said, in a signed article in mouthpiece Panchajanya, that the Cauvery dispute had political overtones. ‘‘If there had been a Congress government in Tamil Nadu, would Karnataka have behaved in the same manner?

‘‘Would Karnataka have taken the same stand had Jayalalithaa not raised the issue of Congress president Sonia Gandhi’s citizenship or if the Congress continued to have an alliance with her?’’

Whatever be the dispute between the states, the Supreme Court court must be obeyed, Vaidya wrote. The Sangh spokesman drew a parallel with the Ayodhya temple dispute and said the Congress had always wanted all parties to abide by the court verdict.

‘‘Then why is the Supreme Court order in the Cauvery dispute not being obeyed? How will the country run if things come to such a pass?’’ Vaidya wrote it was wrong to drag politics into an issue that concerned man’s basic need.

A river, he said, belonged to the nation. ‘‘Even if Karnataka felt the Supreme Court order was not just, it should have approached the court again. On the other hand, Karnataka went before the Cauvery River Authority (CRA) which brought down the quantum of water it had to release to Tamil Nadu.’’

Vaidya was also critical of Karnataka using a farmer’s death as an excuse to stop water supply to Tamil Nadu. It did not obey the CRA’s order either, he wrote. Cauvery was no longer a water dispute, he said. It had turned into a political issue for rivals to settle scores.
