Rowers146; silver streak

Indian rowers added two more silver to the tally at the 15th Asian Games at Doha on Thursday. Dharmesh Sangwan, Satish Joshi, Jenil Krishnan, and Sukhjeet Singh fetched silver medal in the men8217;s four rowing event.

While Bajrang Lal Thakur went on to win the first individual rowing medal for the country. He won the silver in the Men8217;s single sculls event.

Bronze in billiards

India8217;s seasoned campaigners Geet Sethi and Ashok Shandiliya made amends for missing out on a gold medal by clinching the bronze in billiards doubles event with a fluent 3-0 victory over Pakistan .

The India duo, who slid to a shock defeat against an unknown Myanmar pair in the semi-finals in the morning, came back with a vengeance to drub the Pakistani duo of Sohail Shahzad and Vishan Gir with an emphatic 101-13, 102-9, 102-37 scoreline at the Al Sadd Indoor Hall.

Saina bows out

TEENAGE badminton sensation Saina Nehwal bowed out in the women8217;s pre-quarter final match as the Indian challenge in the singles event at the 15th Asian Games ended with Anup Sridhar and Chetan Anand also making exits in the men8217;s event.

While 16-year-old Saina, the world junior runner-up, and Sridhar went down after a tough fight to their rivals Eriko Hirose of Japan and Ponsana Boonsak of Thailand, former national champion Anand was routed by fourth-seeded South Korean rival Lee Hyun Il here last night.

Saina fought hard in an extremely close opening game in which she saved four game points but then ran out of steam to suffer a 23-25, 7-21 defeat in 34 minutes in the women8217;s singles section.

Spikers blank Kuwait

India brightened their prospects of a semi-final berth in men8217;s volleyball by thrashing Kuwait 3-0 in a league match. The Indians turned on the heat from the word go to record a comfortable 25-17, 25-16, 25-18 victory in a one-sided contest.

Boxers make exit

Jitender Kumar, Diwakar Prasad and Manoj Kumar were outpunched by their respective opponents in the quarter final bouts here today. Commonwealth bronze winner Jitender could not match the might of his Filipino rival Violito Payla and the 51 kg flyweight bout had to be stopped by the referee after the Indian outscored 1 minute, 23 seconds into the third round.

His compatriots Prasad feather and Manoj Kumar light welter also met the same fate at the hands of B Sultonov of Uzbekistan and Sapiev Setik of Kazakhstan respectively and lost by RSCOS Referee Stopped Contest Out Scored. Prasad was halted at 1:16 while Manoj at 1:29 in the third rounds of their 57 and 64 kg bouts.
