For a group of 17 Pakistani boys, who were coming to attend the five-day SAARC Scouts and Guides camp in Gulmarg, the last three days have been nothing short of a nightmare. The reason: First the delay in issuance of visa and then the ordeal at Wagah border.

The camp, organised to promote peace and friendship among children of SAARC nations — held for the first time in Kashmir, is to conclude on Monday and the Pakistani group will now be able to participate only on the last day.

Sources in the Mufti Government said the boys had a visa for New Delhi, Srinagar and Gulmarg only. ‘‘The officials at Wagah told them to go back and come by air, saying they didn’t have permission to travel through Punjab. By the time we intervened, they had been stranded at the border for hours,’’ an official said. The boys finally reached New Delhi on July 2. They had to wait for another day there as there was no arrangement for them to be taken to Srinagar. They were later put on the special train for Amarnath yatris and reached Jammu this morning.
