Robbers loot school, assualt priest, two nuns

APRIL 15: In yet another attack on the Christian community, some criminals forcibly entered the compound of St Teresa School in Kosikalan area of Mathura district on Thursday and made off with thousands of rupees in cash and valuables. They also injured a priest and two of the nuns living in the school.

As per information available, some eight to 10 criminals entered the church forcibly and asked a nun, Mary, for the keys to the almirah. In the meantime, a few of them reached the first floor and stole about Rs 27,000 from another nun, Gloria. They also attacked Father Thomas and injured him, police said. The priest has been admitted to hospital in Delhi in a serious condition.

Archbishop K C Thomas told The Indian Express that in the past few days, many such incidents had been taking place against the Christian community.

A K Jain, DIG, Agra Range, however, told The Indian Express that this was a criminal and not a religious or communal matter since the criminals had the intention of looting the church and they had taken valuables, including cameras and watches, worth about Rs 60-70,000. He assured that the criminals would be arrested and the goods recovered soon.

Meanwhile, the Archbishop of the Agra Catholic Church has made a complaint to the Commissioner of Agra regarding the incident, asserting that this could not be called a normal incident. He has also listed in detail the incidents that had occurred against the Christian community from March 31, 2000, to April 10, 2000, and asked for the security of the Christian community as these incidents were raising a fear in the Christian community.

The DGP, UP, has also taken this matter seriously and asked Jain to take immediate action.

PTI ADDS: The district administration on Friday assured full security to Christian missionaries-run educational institutions in the wake of attacks on Christians in Mathura in the past one week.

The attackers would be brought to book soon, officials said, adding that educational institutions had been told to maintain records of all people visiting the institutions.

Top police and district officials were camping at Kosi Kalan area here where the residence of Father K K Thomas and two nuns was attacked, the officials said.

The Uttar Pradesh government on Thursday said two of the three cases of attacks on Christians in the district had been worked out and asserted there was no communal angle to these incidents.
