Before making away with loot, ‘kind’ thief applied ointment to victim’s woundAn unidentified man broke into the residence of a senior citizen on Monday and stole cash and ornaments worth Rs 93,000. Surprisingly, though the accused had injured Sukhiben Shah (77), he applied ointment to the wound on her head after feeling pangs of guilt. The victim is a widow and lives in Shubh Sandesh Society in Hansraj Lane in Byculla.According to the police, the accused gained entry into Shah’s flat through a window around 6:30 am. He climbed to the second floor with the help of a pipe and broke the window of the room. Shah woke up on hearing the noise. An afraid accused suddenly hit Shah on her head with a walking stick and she became unconscious. He then looted all the ornaments she was wearing and stole Rs 15,000 from her cupboard. But, he fled the house only after applying ointment to Shah’s wounds, said the police. However, a case of robbery has been registered with the police. Shah is presently recovering in Prince Ali Khan Hospital in Byculla and is reportedly in a stable condition. “Shah lived alone in the flat,” said an officer of Byculla police station. “She has two children, but they do not live with her. We’re inquiring into the incident and tracing the identity of the robber,” he said. “We don’t think that Shah was targetted because she is a senior citizen,” said DCP (Zone 3) Ashok Deshbratar. “When the police went to inspect the spot, they noticed that all the windows in the building were grilled except Shah’s. We were surprised to know that the accused had applied ointment to Shah’s wounds,” added Deshbratar.
