Bihar DGP D.P. Ojha’s order to arrest RJD MP Mohd Shahabuddin on charges of kidnapping for murder has snowballed into a political crisis with several ministers demanding Ojha’s scalp. At stake in this volatile game are the fortunes of RJD chief Laloo Prasad Yadav, Shahabuddin and Ojha.
On Wednesday, the DGP had ordered the arrest of the MP accused in 36 cases and charge-sheeted in 26. Today, attributing motives to the DGP’s actions and demanding his dismissal, ministers in the Rabri Cabinet Siwanand Tiwari and Ram Kripal Yadav are defending the MP.
The fact that relations between Laloo and Shahabuddin are strained prompted speculation that the DGP had the former’s endorsement. However, the open defence of Shahabuddin by Tiwari and Ram Kripal — both trusted by and dependent on Laloo — has confused political circles.
Laloo Yadav says he doesn’t know anything and avoided talking on the subject. ‘‘You are always after news…You have nothing else to do? I will find out first and then let you know,’’ Laloo said to the media on his arrival from Delhi at Patna airport.
Meanwhile, Ram Kripal has collected signatures of 12 MLAs and MLCs demanding Ojha’s dismissal. A section of RJD, including Tiwari, believes the DGP is acting on the BJP’s behest to widen the rift between Laloo and Shahabuddin — or at least this is the version they let out. Meanwhile, the DGP has shown no sign of backtracking and the police is taking the DGP’s order seriously. However, in this confusion, two facts are apparent: One that Laloo did not appreciate Shahabuddin considering him dispensable and wanted an opportunity to tell him who ruled Bihar. Second, Laloo wanted some improvement in law and order in the state as a survival strategy.
For Laloo, the nation’s best political survivor this is another test of his acumen. With things having gone this far, the cost of Laloo’s survival will have to be paid either by Shahabuddin or DGP Ojha.
