NEW DELHI, May 7: Irate residents of Uttam Nagar blocked traffic in several places on the main Najafgarh road this morning in protest against the erratic power supply in the area due to theft of power by people from unauthorised colonies.

Meanwhile, the Congress MLA of the area has begun an indefinite strike, alleging an attempt on his life while he was supervising installation of a transformer yesterday.

People squatted on the road today shouting slogans near Mohan garden and the Uttam Nagar police station. Traffic had to be diverted from these areas. According to a resident, 8220;The police resorted to a lathi charge around 10 a.m.. There were three women amongst those injured.8221;

However, the police deny such charges. 8220;We did not resort to lathicharge. Someone might have been injured in the chaos,8221; a policeman said.

The residents were out on the streets till late afternoon. There was a heavy deployment of police in the locality. As the DVB officers were on leave for Muharram, the police took over their role and kept assuring the people that the necessary steps would be taken.

Congress MLA from Hastal Mukesh Sharma has begun a hunger strike against an alleged attempt on his life by some BJP activists. He is demanding their arrest.

He said that the attack was made while he was supervising the installation of 400 KV transformers in the Mohan Garden area. 8220;We were informed by officials of the Delhi Vidyut Board that they have been getting threats against installing transformer in the area. So we thought we will accompany the DVB officials for the installation. They were just about to begin the work when about 25 people landed on the spot shouting Jai Shri Ram8217; and one of them shot at me.8221;

According to him, some of this associates were also hurt by the miscreants. He has decided to continue the strike till a transformer is installed in the area and the power supply is normalised.

However, according to the district police while the DVB was to install two transformers only one was brought. The BJP activists reportedly wanted it placed in a particular area, while the MLA wanted it placed at another.According to the police, though this had resulted in a heated argument, there had been no violence.
