Having suffered a humiliating defeat in the Hamirpur bypolls, the Congress Government in Himachal Pradesh is securing all fronts ahead of the Assembly elections.
While granting a hefty installment of dearness allowance to government servants last week, it also quietly extended the cut-off date for regularisation of daily wagers in government jobs by two years. Government servants and daily wagers form a powerful lobby in the state.
In its election manifesto in 2003, which was later made into a policy document by the Government, the Congress had promised that all daily wagers who had been in continuous government service for eight years till March 31, 2004, would be regularised.
Last week, the Government extended the deadline to March 31, 2006. The decision has already been notified.
“This will directly benefit thousands of newly employed daily wagers,” a senior secretary said. All departments have been told they were free to create additional posts, if required, to regularise the daily wagers.
