SIRSA: Seven persons were killed on the spot and two seriously injured when the jeep in which they were travelling collided with an oil tanker, near village Meerpur on Sirsa-Dabwali road.

Entrance test
AMRITSAR: Guru Nanak Dev University today changed the date of entrance test for admission to Master of Computer Applications, 1998. The test will now be conducted on June 10 instead of June 8. This has been said here today by Dean, Academic Affairs of the university. The other dates will remain the same.

Seminar
LUDHIANA: A two-day symposium of officers of state animal husbandry department and veterinary scientists is being organised by Directorate of Extension Education of Punjab Agricultural University on May 21 and 22 at PAU auditorium. According to PAU Director of Extension Education, Jaspinder Singh Kolar, the university Vice-Chancellor G. S. Kalkat will inaugurate the symposium.

PHAGWARA: Cashier Balbir Singh of the local municipal council was today deprived of his bag containing two cheques of more than Rs 48,000 and a cash of Rs 1500 by unidentified persons, when he was going to deposit it in the Indian Overseas Bank in the town. Council executive officer Paramjit Singh Ghuman said when Balbir Singh, after depositing Rs 10576 in the Central Bank of India’s branch here, was cycling towards the Overseas Bank, he was felled by miscreants near the old bus stand chowk, who deprived him of the bag. A case has been registered.

GURDASPUR: Dinanagar police today arrested three men under the cow slaughter Act. Police alleged that Surjit Singh of Permanand village and Roopa and his brother, Manga, of madowal village were engaged in killing and skinning cows and selling their hides to traders in Jalandhar. The arrests have been made under Section three and five of the cow slaughter Act.

Campaign
GURDASPUR: Civil Surgeon Ajaib Singh Sandhu today said they had launched a drive against drug addiction in the district as indicated by full occupancy of the 20-bed hospital here. He said the Punjab Health Secretary had directed all drug inspectors to associate medical officers nominated by the civil surgeons while inspecting stocks of chemists and druggists in the state. Such a drive, he added, would help deter them from stocking intoxicant drugs and syrups. Dr Sandhu said the government was also determined to check the menace of pre-birth sex determination tests.

Ban
HOSHIRAPUR: Keeping in view the ensuing by-election of Sham Chaurasi reserve vidhan sabha constituency, the District Magistrate has imposed Section 144 Cr. PC banning possession of weapons. These orders will remain in force up to June 10. The District Magistrate has also ordered to all the printers, publishers and candidates to restrict the printing and publication of all types of election material in accordance with the provisions of the representation of the people Act.
