PUNE, Jan 1: The petrol crisis which threw the city out of gear for an entire day today has ended. Normal petrol and diesel supply at all the 90 petrol pumps in the city, which ran dry today, will return to normalcy by Saturday afternoon.

The crisis ended after the Pune petrol dealers called off their “no-purchase campaign” against the oil corporations for their alleged arbitrary actions against the dealers.

A decision was taken by the association after the meeting of dealers’ representatives and Federation of All Maharashtra Petrol Dealers’ Associations (FAMPEDA) with the regional level coordinator of the oil industry in Mumbai.

Speaking to The Indian Express, president of Pune Dealers’ Association (PDA) Chottubhai Madhani said the oil companies will train and equip the dealers to draw samples of the supplies before decanting at the pumps.

“The oil companies have expressed their concern towards our demands of stoppage of arbitrary action taken so far and have accepted that the dealers responsibility in the product failure at the clinical or chemical test is not absolute,” he said. Thus, the oil corporations have accepted that the responsibility of the product failing chemical or clinical tests does not lie with the dealer if the density of product matches with recorded density or with the preserved sample, said Madhani.

“They also agreed not to initiate any such action in future till full training and equipping of dealers in sampling is completed. In view of acceptance of our stand, PDA is suspending its no purchase campaign”, he added.

Meanwhile, the pause in petrol and diesel supply put a wet blanket on the New Year festivities as they lined up in scores at a few petrol pumps in the city who had their stocks. Most among these exhausted their stock by late afternoon.
