JAMMU, SRINAGAR, AUG 9: A red alert has been sounded in the state and the Army, along with other counter-insurgency agencies, have been put on maximum alert following the Hizbul’s decision to call off its ceasefire.

Sources said that only one week to go for Independence Day, Army commanders in various sectors have been asked to step up their vigil in view of the possible Hizbul strikes to show that they are back in operation.

Says Director General of Police, Jammu and Kashmir, Gurbachan Jagat: “I am apprehensive of their hitting soft targets. They will have to demonstrate on the ground that the ceasefire has been withdrawn.”

BSF chief of the Valley Inspector General K Vijaykumar also echoed this: “We even apprehend other groups to commit violence, those who were against the ceasefire in the name of Hizbul. It is now a period of extra-caution for the security forces,” he said. Intelligence agencies have reportedly intercepted a wireless message from Kari, the Hizbul Commander in the southern Pir Panjal Range, instructing his cadres to strike in various parts of Jammu. Kari, sources said, was a hardliner and against the ceasefire announced by Hizbul last month.

MILITANTS ARRESTED: Three militants of the Lashker-E-Toiba, who were planning a strike on Amarnath pilgrims, were arrested on Tuesday from Sonamarg, a few kms from the Baltal-Amarnath route.

A large quantity of arms and ammunition was seized from them.

Meanwhile, another group of 887 pilgrims left Jammu today for Pahalgam, the base camp of Amarnath yatra.
