AHMEDABAD, Oct 19: Rebel Congress corporators of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) received a major setback with Congress candidate Meghsinh Solanki winning the recent Saijpur Bogha by-elections.

However, rebel leaders feel that it was not a major setback for them. They claimed that the victory was not because of the efforts of the Leader of the Opposition in the corporation Himmat Singh Patel but following efforts of the minority community which voted outright and also of the efforts of the city unit president Rajkumar Gupta.

Aneesha Mirza, a rebel corporator claimed the victory has not improved the image of Patel. She said their agitation against Patel was on and would intensify after the Diwali.

However, sources close to Patel said the victory was a setback for the rebel leaders who have decided to slow down their agitation against Himmat Singh.

Another rebel corporator said the victory was due to the efforts of Rajkumar Gupta and Kalupur MLA Farooq Shaikh, who had influenced the minority voters in the area. He claimed the victory was the outcome of dissatisfaction of local people against the Bharatiya Janata Party.

About nine Congress corporators are protesting against Patel continuing as the Leader of the Opposition alleging that the Congress leader was working hand in glove with the BJP. However, Himmat Singh said there was no factionalism and all were united.
