The Government on Wednesday appointed Nirupama Rao, currently Additional Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs, as India’s next high commissioner to Sri Lanka. She will replace Nirupam Sen, who has been appointed as India’s Permanent Representative in the United Nations. Rao, who has also been MEA spokesperson, is expected to take up her assignment shortly. A 1973-batch Indian Foreign Service officer, Rao was India’s ambassador in Lima and has also served in Moscow, Vienna, Colombo and Washington.
