AHMEDABAD, Nov 15: Large-scale textile units may be allowed entry into the garment manufacturing segment and the Textile Ministry is holding serious discussion with its commerce counterpart in this connection, Union Textile Minister Kashiram Rana said this here on Sunday.
Inaugurating the 54th All India Textile Conference coinciding with the golden jubilee celebration of the Ahmedabad unit of the Textile Association of India, Rana said he was aware of the genuine difficulties of the textile industry and therefore his ministry had sent a proposal to the Finance Ministry with regard to rationalisation of excise tariffs which was under consideration of the Central government.
He said the government gave priority to modernisation of weaving and processing sectors and that all upgradation would backed up by soft loans but the industry had to be fortified with suitable management practices.
Rana said the government was determined to see the textile industry earn foreign exchange. He said modernisation was a must if it was to survive global competition.
Rana said the government was considering a proposal for technological upgradation fund in the Ninth Plan period involving some financial institutions. He said textile exports in the past decade recorded an average growth rate of around 20 to 22 per cent but "that rate in terms of dollars had come down to 5.7 per cent in the financial year of 1997-98”.
