GEORGETOWN, March 1: Mark Ramprakash hit an unbeaten 64 to save England from the ignominy of a follow-on on the third day of the fourth Test against West Indies today.

The England hopes hung in the balance at lunch when they were 150 for nine and needing another three runs to avoid being asked to bat again. West Indies made 352 in their first innings.

However, Ramprakash and lastman Phil Tufnell saw the side through with the former leading the charge.

With England in dire trouble at the start of the day, resuming at 87 for six, Ramprakash and tailender Robert Croft had earlier crafted a resilient seventh-wicket stand of 64 to take them close to the safety mark.

But then off-spinner Carl Hooper plunged them back deep in trouble with two wickets in an over and leg-spinner Dinanath Ramnarine dismissed Angus Fraser as three wickets fell in the space of one run.

Croft, who went in with England at 75 for six, batted with a daffodil tucked into his pads to mark St David’s Day and defied all the West Indiesbowlers for two hours.

Earlier on Saturday, England had done well to dismiss home side for 352 after they resumed the day at 271-3. But the visitors’ joy was short-lived as the West Indian pace attack quickly ripped through the top four English batsmen before debutant leg-spinner Dinanath Ramnarine rubbed salt into English wounds by dismissing Graham Thorpe and Jack Russell.

Skipper Michael Atherton was dismissed for a duck, edging nervously to Brian Lara at first slip off Ambrose before Mark Butcher (11) was trapped lbw by Ian Bishop.

Atherton has now gone 14 innings without a Test 50 and a year without a Test century.
