The Chhattisgarh government today sent out some tough signals after the Supreme Court order on the closure of 102 private universities registered under state law.

After three hours of discussions at Raj Bhawan, which was chaired by Governor K.M. Seth and CM Raman Singh, the government has asked the affected universities to either obtain affiliations with the two state universities or wait for UGC’s decision on permitting such universities in the state.

The state maintained its stand saying the decision was made after considering the plight of the students registered with these universities.

The government assured the universities that it would examine possibilites of enacting separate or composite legislations to enable them to function in the state but it would only happen after a joint inspection on the status of the institutions by HRD and UGC teams.

It was made clear that unless UGC gives a nod on the fate of these varsities the state will not take an initiative.

The SC had cracked its whip on the universities — sanctioned during the Ajit Jogi government— by declaring section 5 and 6 of the Chhattisgarh Private Universities (Establishment and Regulations) Act 2002 null and void.
