The Chhattisgarh government’s decision to accord recognition under new acts to seven private universities, closed down following a Supreme Court order, has run into difficulties following differences within the state Cabinet.

‘‘Although Higher Education Minister Ajay Chandrakar wanted to table the legislation in the recently concluded session, many of us in the Cabinet are of the view that the government should not be in haste,’’ a senior minister in Raman Singh’s Cabinet said.

The Supreme Court had on February 11 quashed a provision of Chhattisgarh Private Sector Universities Act, 2002, terming it ‘‘unconstitutional’’ and cancelled registration of 107 private universities in the state. CM Raman Singh had said seven of the universities would be given recognition through separate legislations during the Budget session that ended on March 24.

‘‘However, many of us were of the view that the SC had taken a strong view on the private university Act, and no action of the government should give an impression that it was not ready to implement the Court order,’’ the minister said.
