CHENNAI, NOV 11: Tamil Nadu government’s emissaries will leave for the forests tonight to negotiate with Veerappan to secure the release of actor Rajkumar, Tamil Desiya Iyakkam leader P. Nedumaran said today.
Nedumaran, along with Rajkumar’s sons — Sivarajkumar and Raghavendra, told mediapersons at his residence that he was very optimistic about the release of the actor this time. “I decided to undertake the mission, respecting the requests made by leaders of the two states and personalities from all walks of life,” Nedumaran said. He, however, added, “I am not a government emissary,” emphasising that he had not received any letter from the Karnataka government.
When asked whether the emissaries had received any signal from Veerappan, Nedumaran replied that there was no necessity for it. “I cannot disclose everything to you,” he said, when a scribe requested him to elaborate his game-plan for the rescue mission.
“We will come with the actor as early as possible,” he said. when asked how long it would take to complete the mission. Justifying his confidence, especially after the Supreme Court order stopping the release of 51 TADA detainees, that was demanded by Veerappan, he said the emissaries had worked out an explanation to convince Veerappan.
He denied that there was a lack of co-ordination between him and Nakkeeran editor R.R. Gopal. “We are are going in two cars since all of us cannot be accommodated in one car,” Nedumaran quipped in a lighter vein.
Requesting the National Human Rights Commission to be a party in the bail applications of the TADA prisoners expected to be filed before the Karnataka High Court soon, he termed the detention “as the worst instance of human rights violation”.
Replying to a question on whether he would be taking anything, including medicines, for Rajkumar, he said: “I have with me the love and regards of the people of the two states.”
