More than 10 years after he walked through the corridors of former Maharaja Brig Bhawani Singh’s City Palace with Princess Diana, Prince Charles was back in the Pink City, walking through a heritage corridor, talking to schoolkids and getting the feel of Rajasthan.
As part of his weekend schedule in the desert state, the Prince of Wales began his day with children at the Palace School before heading out to explore the city beyond the palace gates.
His destination this morning was Amber village, 11 kms away from Jaipur city. Through the bylanes, Charles wound his way up to Panna Meena Ka Kund. Walking around the step-well, he was briefed on the restoration work being done through an ADB loan.
And as he walked out of the step-well and back onto the streets of Amber, a group of women along the way broke into a song. He folded his hands and smiled before moving on. He was waylaid again, this time by schoolkids who sang and danced as the Prince walked on, to the 270-year-old Chanwar Palkiwalon Ki Haveli.
And to give the Prince of Wales a real feel of rural Rajasthan, artisans and musicians were driven to the haveli where they sang for him. Much to their delight, the Prince broke into a spontaneous jig. The Prince and his entourage are scheduled to visit waterman Rajender Singh in Alwar tomorrow before flying to Aao village to get a glimpse of rural life.
