PATHANAMTHITTA, MAY 3: Southern Railway, Chennai, won the 21st Federation Women’s title outclassing Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB), Thiruvananthapuram, in the final played at the Blessen George Stadium here tonight.

In a match that lasted about 70 minutes, the Railways once again shattered the hopes of KSEB to adorn the crown in the 21-year history of the Federation Cup winning with 25-18, 18-25, 25-18 and 25-15.

It was not not the brilliance and overall dominance of the Chennai team that gifted them the title but the erratic smashes of the KSEB players combined with luck helped it to annex the title.

The match between the archrivals did not rise to the standard of a final.

The teams scored points through errors than their skills. Except the captains of both sides, Salomi Ramu and Aju Jacob, all other players committed errors. K Geetha Raju, M Sunitha (setter) and Mini Elizabeth fetched points for Railways while PR Sindhu and Gisha George excelled for the losers.

Railways began the day in whirlwind fashion and earned a two-point lead and maintained it till they won the set. The KSEB players failed to coordinate and even wasted simple smashes enabling Railway team finish the set in 17 minutes (25-18). However, the KSEB women snatched the second set with the same score and in the same time. But virtually it was the Railways’ error, which ultimately helped KSEB to win the set. Railways faults fetched KSEB ten points (25-18).

The third and fourth sets were rather easily won by the Railways at 25-18 and 25-15.
