CHANDIGARH, August 2: The causeway constructed by the Municipal Corporation on the Sukhna choe in Industrial Area, Phase I, will be inaugurated on August 9.

Constructed at a cost of nearly Rs 25 lakh, it is expected to partially relieve the burden of traffic on the Chandigarh-Panchkula road. The three-lane causeway is 33 feet wide and connects the railway station with Industrial Area, Phase I.

In this way, vehicles coming from the railway station to the two Industrial Areas, the southern sectors and S.A.S. Nagar can directly come via the causeway. Also, vehicles coming from Kalka, Manimajra or Panchkula which are headed towards these areas can turn left from the traffic lights ahead, which lead towards the railway station, and then take the causeway route.

The causeway is situated near the workshop of the Chandigarh Transport Undertaking (CTU) in Industrial Area. The road on both its sides is 22 feet wide. The road towards the CTU workshop, which was earlier in a bad shape, has been re-laid.

The causeway replaces the narrow footbridge on the choe which could scarcely be used by four-wheelers. Corporation officials say that the causeway will be able to function almost throughout the year, except when the rainfall is extraordinarily heavy and the floodgates of the Sukhna choe have to be opened.

The monsoons this year did not cause this situation. Officials highlight that almost 2,000 cusecs (cubic feet of water per second) can pass under the causeway without any overflow, since it has 15 vents of four-feet diameter each.
