The DSPs (Social Justice and Human Rights) and police inspectors in areas were the prevalence of the two tumbler system had been reported have been instructed to conduct statewide raids to put an end to the practice.

The Social Justice and Human Rights Department of the Tamil Nadu Police had recently used decoys to gather information about the practice of using separate utensils for lower castes. The practice was reported only in a few pockets of Cuddalore district as most tea shops were using disposable cups. A release said the list of such places had been consolidated and communicated to the local police stations and other authorities concerned.

“All these places are periodically checked by mobile police squads and there have been no adverse complaints,” IG Pradeep V Philip said. He said surprise checks were conducted in some places in Cuddalore and action taken against people who practised the two tumbler system. “Three cases have been filed and the accused arrested,” he said.

In order to sensitise the public against such practices, the department has been organising awareness campaigns like social justice tea parties. This had been done in association with the representatives of reserved panchayats, political parties and NGOs.
