NEW DELHI: Delhiites suffered a day of biting cold on Saturday as chilly surface winds and a thick blanket of fog brought down temperatures to 11.3 degrees celsius (maximum) and 4.7 (minimum), the lowest this season. Holding little hope for respite, the weather office forecast chilly surface winds and fog for Sunday also. Several trains came in late because of poor visibility. Vehicular traffic also was reduced to a crawl, specially in the morning hours.
Train timings
HUBLI: Train timings of the newly introduced train no SP-1 and SP-2 Vasco-Kulem-Vasco Passenger service have been revised for better train connection facilities to Konkan Railway trains at Margaon with effect from Saturday. No SP-1 Vasco-Kulem passenger will leave Vasco at 1300 hrs arrive at Margaon at 1350 hrs leave Margaon at 1355 hrs and reach Kulem at 1510 hrs. SP-2 Kulem-Vasco passenger will leave at 1215 hrs arrive at 1310 hrs and leave Margaon at 1315 hrs and reach Vasco at 1420 hrs.
Singer dead
PUNE: Noted Marathi playback singer, Malti Pande passed away on Saturday following a heart attack. She was 67. A disciple of Hirabai Barodekar, Malti sang in 30 Marathi movies. She is survived by husband and a son.
Petro bonds
NEW DELHI: The government on Saturday asserted it would go ahead with the issue of Rs 18,200 crore Petro bonds by this financial year end to meet the oil pool deficit. "We are working out the details in consultation with the petroleum ministry and it is our expectation that the oil bond process would be completed by the end of this financial year," Finance Secretary Montek Singh Ahuluwalia told reporters.
N-E quake
SHILLONG: An earthquake of moderate intensity rocked Shillong and its neighbouring areas at around 1730 hrs. The quake lasted for a few seconds. No loss of life or damaged property was reported so far.
Davanagere quiet
DAVANAGERE: Twenty-six people were arrested in connection with Friday’s violence even as the commercial town of Davanagere, which was tense following the publication of an article hurting the sentiments of a community, returned to normal on Saturday. The people of a particular community had taken out a procession and submitted a memorandum to the deputy commissioner, demanding action against the editor of the newspaper and author of the article. While returning, some miscreants had stoned vehicles and buildings.
Estate agent shot
MUMBAI: An estate agent was shot dead by unidentified assailants at Phitwala Road near Elphinston in Central Mumbai on Saturday evening. The victim was identified as Cosmos Franscis Fernandes, 31, police said. The background of the victim and the possible cause of attack were being investigated, police added.
