Punjab Congress chief H.S. Hanspal has resigned following reports that a new state head is being appointed.
Hanspal, whose three-year term expired this month, said today that he has submitted his resignation to party chief Sonia Gandhi.
“I quit a few days ago since my three-year term was about to end,’’ said Hanspal , adding that he was willing to serve in any post, including “a second term” as state chief.
The Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) has already authorised Sonia Gandhi to appoint a new chief. The two probable candidates include ex-minister Shamsher Singh Dullo, former Lok Sabha MP from Ropar, and former Youth Congress chief Manish Tewari, son of the late V N Tewari .
According to sources in New Delhi, Sonia Gandhi is likely to appoint new PCC presidents for Punjab, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Gujarat, Uttaranchal and Himachal tomorrow. Sources said the West Bengal, Chhattisgarh and Haryana units would have to wait a little longer.
