KULLU: Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal has reiterated that the state government was committed for the uplift of weaker section in the state. He was addressing a gathering at Banjar, sub divisional head quarters on Wednesday. He said that the state government would not face any problem in getting funds from the Centre to launch speedy development activities in the state.

NAHAN: District Election Officer (Panchayats) has issued an order notifying by-election process for the posts of vice-presidents gram panchayat Jhakando in Shillai block, gram panchayat Dibber in Rajgarh and gram panchayat Shilawara in Sangrah block and members of panchayat samitis. Claims and objection will be received from public by concerned tehsildars between May 1 and 5. Appeals will be entertained from May 6 to 12, which would be disposed of from May 13 to 19 and final publication of electoral rolls will be made on May 20.

MISHAPJALANDHAR: Three sisters who suffered accidental burns when a condensor of a ceiling fan fell on them at their home in Srinh village near Nakodar on April 27, died one by one in the Civil Hospital here yesterday, police said. Pina, 12, Rajni, 23, and Renu Bala, 24, sitting together in a room, screamed for their lives when sparks from the condensor fell on them, causing severe burns.

TRAFFIC CONTROL

AMRITSAR: Traffic control in the city will be reviewed every fortnight, it was decided at a meeting held under the chairmanship of Deputy Commissioner Amarjit Singh. In order to reduce congestion in the walled city and its surrounding areas, separate and independent traffic places have been provided.

DEMAND

AMRITSAR: The Punjab unit of the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) has asked Congress president Sonia Gandhi to remove the state Congress president and restructure the Punjab Pardesh Congress Committee before the panchayat polls. In a joint statement, NSUI chief Ajaypal Singh Taran Tarni and state spokesman Pankaj Sharma said a survey has revealed the decreasing clout of PPCC president Rajinder Kaur Bhattal.

SHIMLA: The state panchayat parishad in its meeting held here today under the chairmanship of D.R. Dhiman has urged the state government to constitute district planning committee as laid down in the Panchayati Raj Act. The executive committee of the parishad also demanded that the annual confidential reports of all district-level officers should be written by the Zila Parishad, that of block-level officers by chairman, panchayat samitis.

SHIMLA: The Students Federation of India today submitted a memorandum to Governor V.S. Rama Devi seeking her intervention in filling all vacant posts of teachers and holding of elections to the Students’ Central Association. The memorandum lists demands including grant of recognition to the B.Ed-course and holding of successive examinations.

PROGRAMME

PHAGWARA: The Punjab unit of the Bahujan Samaj Party has prepared a 15-point programme with the slogan of "Save country, Save Constitution and Save Dalits". Party general secretary Avtar Singh Karimpuri said that block, tehsil, district and state level rallies will be organised to mobilise Dalits.

FARIDKOT: The district administration has launched a special drive to beautify Faridkot town and to begin with, the Shaheed Bhagat Singh Park has been developed at a cost of Rs 5 lakh. Deputy Commissioner G.S. Grewal said the fountain chowk in front of the kotwali and district education office has also been developed.

AGITATION

BATHINDA: The Dalit Zabar Virodhi Action Committee has threatened to launch a statewide agitation in case a minor Dalit girl who has been missing for the past 24 days was not traced soon. The committee, which met the Deputy Commissioner, expressed its anguish that the police was dilly-dallying and though it had rounded up four persons, the whereabouts of the girl were still not known.
